PERSONALITY: "Abrasive" might be an apt word to describe Hikari. "Short-tempered" would be another one, and the same can be said for words like "aggressive," "headstrong," "brash," etc. Honest and blunt to a fault, Hikari is rarely one to mince words. If his best friend and crush is making him and the rest of their friends late for school, he'll tell her. If he thinks his land-dwelling classmates are treating him and his sea-dwelling classmates unfairly, he'll tell them. If he thinks the god governing his village is being unreasonable, he'll tell it. Despite being the son of a priest (who is also essentially the village chief), respect for authority is honestly not something Hikari has a lot of. Rather than be a follower of the status quo, Hikari is the sort of person who challenges the norms and rules of the society around him, whether he actively realizes it or not. From his simple perspective, he just doesn't agree with the way things are at times and feels they should be changed, even if that means butting heads with others.

But as much of a punk brat Hikari can seem to be, his brash honesty comes out of genuine sincerity. Whether he's right or wrong, he is forthcoming about it, especially when he's wrong. After finding out that a student he punched did not sabotage his and his friends' school project like he initially thought, he goes out of his way to approach the student not only to apologize, but also to tell him that he should punch him back for what he did. It may not seem like it at times given how loud and outspoken he can be, but Hikari is never the sort to be out looking for trouble. While his "act first, think later" attitude might land him into trouble, it comes from good intentions and a kind heart. He would never be the kind of person to say something malicious or intentionally spiteful in order to hurt someone, it's just not who he is. Hikari's too straightforward for one, but he's also just not that mean of a person. While he'll tease people or even get into physical fights from an argument escalating, he'd never do something like pick on someone. If he has problems, he wants to settle them face-to-face rather than playing dirty.

However, Hikari is still just a teenage kid. For all his blunt honesty in most cases, he's unsurprisingly shy and unwilling to admit the truth when it comes to romantic feelings. He quickly shies away from topics revolving crushes or liking someone, feeling it's both embarrassing to talk about and lame that he doesn't know what to say about it. Despite that, he still wants to look cool in front of his peers. Even after realizing the depth of his feelings for Manaka, he more than likely would have never actually said anything about it if circumstances hadn't forced him to. While he butts heads with rules and is rarely afraid to share his opinion on something, when it comes to change regarding the dynamics of his circle of friends, he can be unwilling to face it. If nothing is wrong with the way things are, then isn't it fine to leave them like that? Eventually though, he comes to accept that even if change is inevitable and isn't necessarily something that can be controlled, that doesn't mean that change is bad thing.

Although he's bad with romance and romantic feelings specifically, Hikari's actually pretty understanding when it comes to emotions and love in general. While of course he loves and defends his sister even after she falls in love with someone who lives on land, he sympathizes and can see where that man's daughter is coming from when she resents his sister for getting together with her father. He even does everything he can to reconcile their problems so that they can all be happy together. While he sincerely believes that Manaka is in love with someone else and not him, he makes peace with that and wishes for Manaka to be happy more than anything else. Knowing that the impending disaster is partly because of the disagreements between those from the sea and those from the land, he does everything he can to reconcile the two and ultimately help both, even when neither side actually wants to make peace. Even without any guarantee that his efforts will pay off, Hikari works relentlessly to help his loved ones. When it comes down to it, Hikari believes it's better to have loved and lost than never loved at all. Even if it can be painful, even if it hurts, even if nothing ever comes out of those feelings, they're still worth something in his eyes.

ABILITIES: Hikari has what's called an ena in canon, a thin protective layer of skin that sometimes sparkles in certain angles of sunlight. In all seriousness, it's what allows him to live underwater. He can breathe both underwater and on land perfectly fine, and neither the cold temperature nor crushing pressure of deeper parts of the ocean seem to bother him. (Less seriously, it also seems to make him immune to the physics of being underwater. You won't see his hair floating around underwater like it should be, and he can run on underwater ground like he would on regular land.) The ena requires periodic contact with saltwater. Without saltwater, it begins to dry and crack, and if left alone for too long, can be lost completely.

Aside from that, he's a healthy teenage boy who's used to taking care of chores around the house, whether that's laundry or making meals. He's got maybe a little too much energy on his hands, but that's about it.

INVENTORY: Nothing particularly special. Hikari travels light and simple.

MEMORY ALTERATION: After rescuing the comatose Manaka from the Wooden Maiden Graveyard underwater and bringing her back to the land, Hikari goes back to the sea in order to investigate it and what its connection to the world's current circumstances are. Before he gets to the graveyard properly, he's dragged deeper into the water by a sudden whirlpool, reminiscent of the Boatdrift Ceremony five years ago. As he begins to lose consciousness, he hears the voice of the sea god and is told that another sea needs help as well. If Hikari can find a way to help it, the sea god promises that Manaka and the rest of Shioshishio will awaken and that the surface will return to normal. With no other ideas or solutions, Hikari agrees and closes his eyes.
